AWAY WITH MELANCHOLY (Mozart)

Updated: Sep 9

Anyone starting to learn the piano often comes across boring, mechanical exercises or little childish tunes. Quite often, however, students ask for something more beautiful and stimulating, perhaps signed by a great composer. That’s why I chose a very simple piece but with a prestigious signature. It’s enjoyable thanks to the play of phrases and the symmetry of the bass, and it can also capture the interest of a mature ear.

Not by chance AWAY WITH MELANCHOLY appears in Clementi’s The Art of Playing the Piano (late 18th century), a book that was widely used before Beyer became the standard teaching method. Compared to the original, the dotted note has been removed.

Mozart (1756–1791) and Clementi (1752–1832) were contemporaries and knew each other.
