The difference between simple and compound meters essentially lies in the number of parts into which the beat is divided. Each metronome beat can be divided into two, three, or more parts.
SIMPLE METERS
We have a simple meter when each beat is divided into two equal parts.
The time signature tells us in advance whether the meter is simple or compound.

COMPOUND METERS
We have a compound meter when each beat is divided into three equal parts.
Here too, the time signature indicates the nature of the subdivision.
